LJ Format help wanted

Any one of you brilliant friends of mine want to help me configure my LJ so I can have a banner at the top? I'm clueless with the programming and annoyed everytime I try to read FAQ's (which don't seem to mention how to do it either). Or does anyone know a customization tutorial that might tell me?

I'd be eternally grateful and offer you whatever was in my power to offer that you might want ....
