riding the analytic high

you know when people make fun of those crazy academics that sit in their ivory towers and pontificate? That crazy academic person? I want to grow up and be that person. I know, there's not much redeeming in that, but i also don't think there's much redemption in working as human resources or other type of wage slave (i speak of my own job experiences here) for the next 20 or so years. The seats are more comfortable, you get paid differently (or, for me, right now, at all), but seriously... I would pay to do what I'm doing. In fact, I am.
I'd much rather be right the hell where I am. Right here, just come from a room where all six of us rewatched Gojira in minute detail, discovering that it doesn't really matter how hokey the effects were, the camera angles and the cutting and the mise en sene all combine to create discomfort so that seeing the monster is almost secondary. How the film reimagines a Japan with a quickly mobilized military and scientific community (without mention of Hiroshima or Nagasaki or WWII) by using WWI military footage of tanks and boats. How the theory that's out there doing socio-historical analysis of Godzilla/Gojira is just ... LAME compared to the kind of analysis they should do.
In short, if I could have an academic woody, I probably would. And there's Akira-watching tonight. I can't wait.
