1) As more a side note than directly addressing the issues at hand: I have no horses in this race, so to speak, but it was a very big reminder for me why I shy away from most RPF fandoms. Fictional characters I can more easily separate from their canon existence if I don't like a direction they go in (the characters vs the way the writers wanted to present them). Real life people I can't do that with and people are not, in general, saints - they're complicated and messy and screw up, and are sometimes not at all the person you thought they were.
Even an actor turning out to be terrible in some way can ruin a fandom for me (forex, Michael Fassbender and X-Men) because they represent the character, even if it's a fandom I've had a great love for much longer than the actor in question has been involved. So I suspect I'm more sensitive to these issues than most - in general, I want to know very, very little about the actors playing my favorite characters for this very reason - but I felt a sinking dismay on behalf of the fandom when the news broke because those do not seem like easy waters to navigate.
2) I have that post open in another tab to reply although it will take me a while to get there, but in short: you make some excellent points. There's been some really good POVs coming out of this discussion and it has been particularly interesting that it fell right before a major change to Tumblr's interface and a few of the resulting posts I saw circulating.
