I do think he's trying to justify the course, although the rumor mill is that the other prof who teaches this same class (but on the odd semesters) is actually good at it. Besides, when I signed up for the thing I knew it was going to be more than just SETI - that was part of what I was looking forward to. And I have learned things in this class, because I worked my ass off to try to pull my own grades up. Still though, with a ton of studying (in group and on my own) I'd still walk into the test, look at the questions, and get completely befuddled. Made me feel stupid, and I *know* I'm not stupid.
I also get the feeling he'd rather be teaching the course on a graduate level but they won't let him, so he's stuck teaching it to undergrads.
