300, and other numbered things

OH hell yes. That was exactly what I wanted in a movie.  Without spoiling it (not that there's a whole ton to spoil - if you've seen the trailers you should have a pretty good idea what the heck it's about) I have to say it met every expectation.  Beautiful, sexy, bloody, yummy. 

Apparently there have been some reviews complaining about the historical accuracy, and all I can say to those people is:  it's not a historical period piece people - it's a fantasy movie.  Of course, apparently that same reviewer was comparing 300 to Gladiator (unfavorably, I might add). They're crazy.  Gladiator was one of those big hollywood movies too.  It's not like it was historically accurate or anything.  Why can't people leave well enough alone and just have fun? 

Well, anyway, I had an absolutely delightful time - the boy bought us food, we actually got to see Joel and catch up a little while standing in line, the crowd was fabulous and hissed in all the right moments, and generally it was a damn fine movie experience.  Visually I'm half in love with everyone - women, men, heck, demi-gods.  I love the semi-glossed almost cartoon style, too.  It's better when they make the whole movie just a little bit CGI and then add in CGI'd bits -less jarring than having 100% normal film switch to the CGI action/monster. 

And I really really really want to talk about the movie, but...just go see it.  Go, pay your $9 or whatever, and have a fabulous time.  Sure, the violence is ... violent.  But they're fighting a losing battle against all the armies of the world!  There have got to be some causalities!  And sure, it's not the most intricate dialog... but ... it's beautiful!  And fun.

That is a movie little EBs will never be watching. I don't do blood/gore/violence/anything like that. Besides, phen was explaining it to me and I couldn't go to sleep just from hearing about it. I don't think seeing it is a good idea, lol.

Oh. em. gee------!! That movie was fucking awesome! Shelley and I saw it then went out to a gay bar, where I got hammered and picked up a pretty albino boy and apparently told him several dozen times how unbelievably awesome 300 was. The Spartans, they goddamn INVENTED machismo~! Stopping every five minutes to toss off testosterone-laden one-liners! Naked people!! What is not to like about this movie??

I think you have to be part gay man and part heterosexual high school boy to fully appreciate this movie.

I saw the graphic novel in Waterstones yesterday and just stood there going "mmmmmm" at it for ages. SO PRETTY. If the movie is anything like it, it will be physically beautiful to look at. And the trailers? Say yes.

I'm a bit o-er about historical accuracy though. I mean, The 300? Is a graphic novel BASED in reality, but really not historically accurate (fighting demonesque thingies etc), but for Troy/Gladiator etc they could have picked a time frame, at least, and stuck to it. Not jam about six centuries into one movie. It's vexing for someone who knows about stuff like, say, Greek pottery, to see for example geometric pottery and the height of red figure thrown together, when in reality these two styles were a few centuries apart. It's stuff like that that gets historically accurate people a'talkin, because all they would have needed would be a handful of history peeps on hand to OK things. They've done this before on movies - Alexander, for example. (Of course, doesn't mean the movie'll be any good...) but mainly I am agreed that a film is a film is a film, you know? It's fantasy. But movies like Gladiator etc perpetuate stereotypes etc and people believe them as fact. Truth is, Gladiator didn't happen. It's like the thing about Caligula (Nero? Bad Mish! But see, this proves my point - stereotypes of 'bad' emperors being interchangable no matter what the history is) making his horse a member of the senate. He never did it, just said he might as well ('cause he didn't much like the senate!)... uh... I digress.

Anyway. I'm opposed to the fact everywhere else in the world gets to see The 300 waaay earlier than England!

The movie is... PRETTIER than the graphic novel!!! And I adored the graphic novel - got it a couple of years ago and drooled all over it.

OH, I know!! I mean about the historical accuracy thing of course - and then people have the gall to say they know what they're talking about because the director went and built a partial coliseum in Malta (or wherever it was)! As if that makes it accurate! And the ones who assume that because it's set in a different time period it's the gospel of that time period - they drive me absolutely nuts! I remember people running around saying it was just like that back then and I wanted to thwap them with a hammer. (ok, yes, i do get passionate about it too.)

But, also, with 300? it has zombies and monsters and stuff in it. That's not real, nor has it ever been! so why would anyone who's seen the movie think that it was even attempting to be historically accurate? i'm confused, i tell you, confused by the crazyness.

Why, I wonder, are they with-holding the 300 goodness from you? That is not fair! You deserve 300 love too!

i *wish* i'd cloned myself!! But sadly, no, it just means i'll be making sure to get the coffee extra caffeinated every day. And if some things have to remain undone, it'll be ok.

And I'm sooo excited about this wedding! Hopefully I'll have a long entry about it when I get back too.
